First term freshman year
First term freshman year This is entry #2 in my series entries that need to be written because some of the new categories dont have enough stuff in them. Today, we have the privilege of dissecting the first term of my freshman year to discuss freshman grading. The background Hopefully you know about pass/no record already. Basically, first term freshman year at MIT, you are only graded in a pass/fail fashion if you get an A, B, or C in a class, it gets recorded on your transcript merely as a P. If you get a D or an F, the class doesnt get recorded on your transcript its as if you never took the class. This is a really good system, for several important reasons. 1. MIT classes are harder than high school classes, and people tend to get lower grades first term at MIT than theyve ever gotten in their lives. 2. The system encourages first-term freshmen to have fun and explore life outside the classroom without being overly preoccupied with their grades. 3. Freshmen can learn to manage their time wisely and find an appropriate balance between work and play without damaging their academic records. Pass/no record really helps MIT students quit stressing about grades, and as a result, freshmen often blow off work and run around and frolic even when they have stuff they ought to be doing. (Case in point: At 1 AM one night in November freshman year, I was studying for an 8.01x (physics) test which was to occur the next morning. My friend Akhil 05 MEng 06 IMed me and asked if I wanted to go explore campus. I said yes. I ended up pulling an all-nighter the night before a test because I was having fun wandering around tunnels and basements and other such places. It was great.) My freshman year Freshman year at MIT was pretty difficult for me academically, since I didnt take AP Physics or AP Chem in high school. Everything was new and challenging, and the problem sets were hard and Id never learned to manage my time wisely in high school, because I could just do all my homework during study hall the morning before it was due, when there even was homework in the first place. I skipped class a lot more frequently than I did in my upperclass years, because I hadnt figured out yet that I learn best from lectures I also skipped class because physics was at 10 AM, and I stayed up until 4 somewhat frequently talking in the hallway with my new friends. Plus, I was still dating my high school sweetheart, and our relationship was going downhill pretty quickly, so I spent a lot of time fighting with him on the phone. All of this stuff was not great for my academic life, as you might imagine. I have to admit that I dont remember exactly how many tests I failed freshman year. I know it was at least three physics tests (two tests during term, plus the final), two calculus tests (one test during term, plus the final), and two chemistry tests (both during term). I ended up with a B+ in my HASS (9.00, intro to psychology), a C+ in 18.01 (single-variable calculus), a C in 5.111 (introductory chemistry), and a C- in 8.01x (physics). Passing in 8.01x was an overall average of 60; I had a final grade of 63.5. And yet, my official transcript just says P for everything. ;) And thats the transcript that admissions committees saw when I applied to graduate school they had no idea that I passed freshman physics by the skin of my nose. Rock out. I had a couple of friends who failed classes first semester, and they just re-took the classes second semester, no big deal. As an upperclassman, there are other strategies Drop Date, the last date you can drop a class, is two or three weeks before final exam week, so if youre not doing well that late in the semester, youll generally just drop the class and re-take it another semester. Juniors and seniors also get to take two classes on pass/fail, which frees them to take interesting classes without worrying about adverse effects on their grade point averages. Current stuff in my life Today was a tax-free holiday in Massachusetts the governor suspended the sales tax for the weekend to encourage people to go shopping. Adam and I didnt have anything to buy other than groceries (which arent taxed in Massachusetts anyway), but we went over to the Galleria just to watch the frenzy. People were swarming over Best Buy, trying to buy their televisions and digital cameras, all for the sake of saving $25 in tax. I love it. People are really bad at math. Adam and I bought a movie and a digital clock. We saved two bucks. I would also like to note that its fun to hang out with course 16 majors, because you can say, This is not rocket science, buddy in a really snotty voice when they suck at doing things like parking the car, and they cant say anything, because after all, its not rocket science, and they of all people should know that. Questions and other things of that nature 1. Colin asked, I was wondering is there a good chance that Ill be able to get the HASS-D course I want if I go on the first day? Are there any notoriously popular HASS-D courses? Specifically, Im thinking I want to take 21M.011 (Intro to Western Music), but I know music is a popular interest among MIT students. Theres usually a pretty good chance that you can get into a class on the first day, even if it is traditionally popular. I didnt get lotteried into 24.900 (Intro to Linguistics) in two different semesters, and the second time I just showed up with an add form, and got in easily. The thing is that a lot of upperclassmen pre-register and enter the lotteries without actually intending to take the classes for which theyre registering I know a few people who actually pick pre-reg courses randomly. As you might imagine, this creates a lot of unexpectedly empty spots in various courses on the first day of class. :) After the lottery results are out, this page will show a list of HASS-Ds with open seats. Although it does vary from semester to semester depending on whats popular, it looks like 21M.011 had quite a few open seats last semester. (And for that matter, even if a course isnt listed as having open seats, there will usually be a few people who decide not to take the class, so its worth showing up the first day with an add form.) The bottom line is that theres very little thats hard and fast about MIT lotteries and other class stuff theres almost always a way to get what you want. 2. Curious Freshman wrote, Are professors rated by students? Is there a way to see the ratings before choosing classes? Do MIT students use ratemyprofessors.com? I wouldnt use ratemyprofessor.com. The one time I visited the site, I noticed that not a lot of MIT people are on it, so the ratings arent reliable. Students evaluate professors and courses in a standardized form at the end of each semester; the evaluations can be found here (certificates required). Those results arent perfect (the surveys are administered during the last week of class, when all the people who hated the class enough to drop it are already gone), but at least theyre standardized and taken by a large number of people. 3. JE asked, For a research career in undergrad to be considered valuable and worthwhile, is publication a must? Ex. is there an X number of times you should be published to have a good shot at a top grad school? You definitely dont need to be published to get into a top grad school. It helps, no doubt, but its not required. Its actually not even common when I went to a workshop on grad school applications junior year, the course 9 faculty said that only about 5% of their applicants are published. So if you can get published through your UROP, get psyched, but if not, dont worry about it in the least. (And, to put in a plug for Melis you can publish in MURJ!)

Relations Between Temperament and Speech-Language Development
The authors provide an overview of issues and research surrounding temperament and how it relates to speech-language development. There have been conflicting views on the exact definition of temperament; however, most researchers agree that temperamental traits are relatively stable over time. As temperament traits interact with the individualââ¬â¢s environmental experiences, personality traits develop (e.g. attitudes, values, self-concept, etc.). The authors identify three models of temperament and how it relates to atypical speech-language development. The disability model proposes that temperament may change due to speech-language disorders, whereas the (pre)disposition or vulnerability model suggests that the onset or changes in speech-language disorders is caused by temperament traits. Finally, the interaction model proposes that the dynamic and complex interaction of disability and vulnerability influence speech-language disorders. Three speech-language disorders and t heir relationship to temperament are explored further by the authors including specific language impairment (SLI), stuttering, and voice disorders. In relation to stuttering, a review of the literature suggests that there are differences in temperament traits when children who stutter (CWS) are compared to children who do not stutter (CWNS). In particular, CWS react more to changes in environment, possess more negative emotions, have decreased attention, have a reduced ability to adapt toShow MoreRelatedThe Ethological Attachment Theory1658 Words à |à 7 Pagesexemplifies social referencing? Character Analysis of Telemachus and The Odyssey by Homer...
Telemachus In the beginning of The Odyssey, Telemachus is not yet a man and not sure of himself yet. Embarking on a mission to find his father, he matures from a child to a strong, single-minded adult. Throughout the poem, Telemachus finds his place in the world and becomes a more well-rounded person. Although Telemachus never quite matches his father Odysseus in terms of wit, strength, agility, his resilience does develop throughout the text. In the epic, The Odyssey, by Homer, the young boy Telemachus changes from an insecure teen into a confident and poised young man as he travels the seas in search for his father, whose bravery and intelligence proves to be comparable to his own. In The Odyssey, Homer shows how Telemachus maturesâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦For example, whenever he tries to order them to leave or take control of the suitors, they are surprised that he can speak so boldly at first, but then begin to mock him for sounding so grown up. During one particular lecture, ââ¬Å"So Telemachus declared. And they all bit their lips, amazed the prince could speak with so much daring. Eupithesââ¬â¢ son Antinous broke their silence: ââ¬ËWell Telemachus, only the gods could teach you to sound so high and mighty!â⬠(Homer 90). He is being mocked for seeming so grown up and trying to take control. They do not see him yet as a man. Homer shows how Telemachus has grown up in The Odyssey, through how he changes his attitude about taking responsibility for his household. At the beginning of the story, he is not that adamant about taking care of his home. He says, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢Isnââ¬â¢t it quite enough that you, my motherââ¬â¢s suitors have ravaged it all, my very best, these many years, while I was still a boy?ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Pg. 103 lines 346-8) He just cares about the material wealth of the household. He doesnââ¬â¢t think that it is his duty to take care of it. This is a very immature view. However, Telemachus does take some responsibility for it. He lets the guest into his house and tells his mother to go upstairs, which shows he is taking responsibility for what is his. This is true in some ways, but he is only taking on minimal responsibility because it is required of him, not because heShow MoreRelatedThe Odyssey, The Presence Of Divine Intervention Essay1545 Words à |à 7 PagesThroughout the Odyssey, the presence of divine intervention overwhelmingly shapes the story as a whole. As the worldââ¬â¢s population grew, so did political and economic instability, as well as major international conflicts. Tensions between countries and cultures tightened, and eventually and inevitably, one of them attacked. This terrorist act brought with it the panic and chaos fuelled haze that was post-911 Australia, and similar to many situations in the past, the fear and vulnerability associated with the community allowed the government quite a substantial amount of political power. We will write a custom essay sample on Terrorism and Immigration Legal Report or any similar topic only for you Order Now This atmosphere of fear and ignorance lead to several incomplete and somewhat extreme pieces of Anti terrorist legislation to be passed by the Howard government, in order to ensure the safety of all Australians, or so they said. Dr Mohammed Haneef a doctor working in Queensland on a skilled migrant visa, soon found himself a victim of these laws. When two Indian men attempted to bomb an airport in Glasgow, UK, Mohammed Haneef became a suspect in the eyes of the Australian Federal Police, and was arrested shortly. Several blunders and misinterpretations by the AFP lead to the wrongful detention and charging of Dr Haneef, a man who spent a total of 12 days in detention without being charged and had his visa unfairly revoked during his trial. Haneef was eventually released and all charges were dropped against him, when the Public Prosecutor determined that there was no legitimate trial against him. However, the course of events that Dr Haneef experienced brought to light the glaring dilemmas associated with Australiaââ¬â¢s radical Anti Terrorist laws and corresponding government agencies. The Clarke inquiry and concurrent recommendations As a result of the badly handled Mohammed Haneef case, the labour party ordered a full inquiry be conducted into the legal case, in order to identify the key faults and inefficiencies in government agencies and legislation that related to the Haneef Case. This Inquiry was called the Clarke inquiry, conducted by John Clarke, a Supreme Court judge. Despite the inquiry lacking several crucial powers, it worked well to suggest a number of key findings and recommendations. Some very key recommendations that worked toward rectifying mistakes made in the Haneef case were as follows: That the government consider establishing legislation or necessary arrangements that would consequently apply to other inquiries and reviews that involve national security. That parliament review part 1c of the Crimes act 1914, the part that relates to terrorism offences. That the Australian government appoint an independent reviewer of the Australian counter terrorism laws. That the Minister for immigration and citizenship be included in the list for security intelligence notifications and reports produced by ASIO, in order to prevent miscommunication in the future. All of these recommendations and more were implemented and thoroughly elaborated on by the Australian government. Anti-Terrorism laws reformed due to the Haneef case. Following the Haneef case and the Clarke inquiry, the government decided that necessary reforms were in order and announced its intentions to amend and alter several Anti-terrorism laws in order for them to correlate with conventional, sophisticated standards, standards that find a fair balance between national security and civil liberties. The Labour government took a major step in deciding to abolish the sedition terms within anti terror legislation while focusing more on rebellious acts that insight violence. The previous laws were deemed restricting of academic liberty and free speech. Some of the other significant changes listed in a newspaper article include the advancement of individual review of the Australian federal police, the governmentââ¬â¢s decision to broaden powers assigned to the Inspector general of intelligence and security which allows inquiries to extend across all National security agencies, and the in-statement of an independent reviewer of Australiaââ¬â¢s counter terrorism laws, to be named the National security Legislation Monitor. These reforms are a strong representation in the governmentââ¬â¢s effectiveness in update obsolete or otherwise procedurally dangerous Anti-Terror laws. These changes are the first of many steps in order to find the balance between human rights and National security. Claims for compensation by Mohammed Haneef After the ill handled arrest and charge against Mohammed Haneef and the distasteful cancellation of his Visa, Haneef has finally returned to Australia to claim compensation against the federal government on the basis on his trauma, loss of wages and career, defamation. Despite having an almost iron hard case against the federal government, Haneef opted to first try his best to resolve the manner through a mediation process. A News article reported that Mohammed Haneefââ¬â¢s lawyers were able to reach an agreement with the federal government and rested his claims for compensation, a substantial claim, though the actual amount is undisclosed. It can be seen as a victory for the Mohammed Haneef and the Australian government, whose reputation will be partially restored over the matter. The government chose to make a good decision and provide Haneef with legitimate compensation through very discreet and uncontroversial means, casting little to no negative association to the government. Formal apology from the Federal government Almost immediately following Dr Haneefââ¬â¢s success in claiming compensation, as reported in a relevant media article, the federal government released a document in the form of a formal apology on behalf of the AFPââ¬â¢s several blunders and misinterpretations, which lead to the prolonged detention and charge of Mohammed Haneef. Haneefââ¬â¢s lawyer congratulated the Government for recognising the need for such measures in a formal declaration of innocence, that would help clear Haneefââ¬â¢s name of any wrong doing . The AFP also participated in the assist of Dr Haneefââ¬â¢s claim for compensation, and were eager to rectify its previous hastily made mistakes. The Federal governmentââ¬â¢s formal apology not only allowed Haneefââ¬â¢s professional reputation be cleansed, but also publicly rid them of any negative association with the controversial court case. Conclusion The politically fueled implementation of Anti-terrorism legislation by the Howard government was a rushed and ineffective endeavor, and despite Mohammed Haneef becoming the victim of such broad laws, his Case, as well as the efforts of the labour government, allowed these radical laws to be reformed to concur with Australiaââ¬â¢s legal and utilitarian standards. John Keats Essays (848 words) - John Keats, Fanny Brawne
John Keats He started at the pacific. All his men/looked at each other with a wild surmise--/silent, upon a peak in Darien"; "Beauty is truth, truth Beauty, --that is all/ ye know on earth, and all ye need to know"; The author of these and many other lines fixed permanently in the shared consciousness of those who speak English, John Keats was an extremely unlikely candidate for poetic immortality. Born into a working-class family two centuries ago. Orphaned in childhood, his work was subjected to vicious attacks by established literary critics, dead in his mid-twenties from tuberculosis, he overcame all obstacles, not only to write some of the finest poems in the language, but also to form, in the minds of millions of people. John Keats was born in London on October 31, 1795. The first child of Thomas Keats he was a livery-stable keeper. And his wife Frances (Jennings) Keats was a housewife. Three more sons were born one of whom died in infancy. A daughter was born to the couple before Thomas's death in April 1804 from a horse accident. With four very young children to care for. Frances married a man named William Rawlings in 1805. The marriage was not successful and when the couple separated in the following year she and her four children went to live with her mother. John Keats received his earliest education at a private school in Enfield run buy the Reverend John Clarke. Among his classmates was the headmaster's son, Charles Cowden clarke. Who would be his lifelong friend. Keats's mother died of tuberculosis in February 1810, and in 1811 he was taken out of school and apprenticed to Thomas Hammond, a surgeon at Edmonton hospital. It was during this time that he began to read poetry seriously and to write it himself. His apprenticeship ended by mutual consent in 1815, and Keats went to London to study medicine at the joint school of St. Thomas's and Guy's Hospitals. In July 1816, he passed his examination as an apothecary, and worked until April of the next year as a medical practitioner. Keats's first volume entitled simply Poems was published in March 1817 and failed to attract much notice beyond a favorable review from Leigh Hunt. During that time Keats met Fanny Brawne, a young woman who throughout what appears to have been for him at least. Rather tormented relationship was to be the great love of his brief life and to whom he became engaged some time around the end of the year. By December 1818 when his brother Tom died of tuberculosis. On February 3, 1820 Keats had a coughing fit that led him to hemorrhage some dark arterial blood. With his medical training he recognized the gravity of the situation and he told his friend Charles Armitage Brown, "That drop of blood is my death-warrant; I must die." After another relapse in June 1820 Keats determined to go to Italy, from whose warmer and drier climate he hoped to find some relief of his suffering. On September 18, he sailed for Naples with a close friend the artist Joseph Severn. Keats never saw England or fanny again. The two men took lodgings in Rome, where severn loyally cared for Keats, who retained his gentle and uncomplaining nature until his death on February 23, 1821. He was not quite four months past his twenty-fifth birthday. In addition to his poetry Keats is the author of some of the most interesting letters by any literary figure. In their aesthetic theorizing, their insights into nature of the creative process and their constant display of a lovable and admirable personality, his letters not only complement his poetry but shows an intellectual grasp and penetration that is not always evident in the poems themselves. The life of Keats to some degree mythology by biographers and other enthusiasts has done as much as anything to fashion the popular image of the poet as a doomed and tortured soul. Scorned by an uncaring and pouring out his heart in spasms of unrequited love. And his work has likewise done much to shape the common view of poetry as sensuous images expressed in rhapsodic language that, to quote his own lines on the nightingale's song,"oft-times hath/ charmed magic casements, opening on the foam/ Of perilous seas, in faery lands forlorn." The best of his poems, of course, transcend such stereotypes. Gorgeous as their music may be, they do not traffic in pretty escapist fantasies, but instead confront some of life's most complex problems and situations, with
